Well, we had all been healthy for a long time, I guess we were due. For the last few days, all of us have been sick…and in different ways.
Last Saturday, I got a stomach bug that didn’t cause me to vomit or anything, but slowed me way down for 24 hours. I went to bed at 8pm on Saturday night, but slept terribly. This passed, and then we noticed that Adria was starting to come down with a cold. That’s a shame, but we can deal with it. Then Amanda got the cold, and she got it worse than Adria. Then I started to get a scratchy throat, but it was pretty minor by comparison to Amanda.
On Tuesday, Austin was sent home with a fever. We think that he got the same cold (and just had a brief fever response), but it gave him a sore throat which made Wednesday and Thursday interesting. But by Thursday night, he was eating and sleeping well, and we expected to send him to daycare on Friday…we were over the hump!
Then, Thursday night, Adria woke up crying around 2am and had vomited in her bed.
That began a very long night of changing her sheets twice and helping her clean herself up every 30-60 minutes (she eventually learned to use the trash can).
In the morning, Adria was still heaving every so often, even though there was no apparent trigger at all (and nothing left to expel). Obviously, we kept her home from school. We really didn’t want Austin to get whatever stomach bug that Adria had, so with no small measure of irony we actually took him to daycare to try and keep him healthy. Sheesh. We spent the day Friday nursing Adria back to health…she was a real trooper, although she was quite obviously tired and uncomfortable. She got to watch a lot of TV that day.
The whole time that we were watching Adria, my cold was on a low burn and Amanda was pretty sick. Last night (Friday night), we all slept well…Adria slept from 8pm to 6:45am. Austin slept from 8pm until 4:30am, then was soothed back to sleep until 5:30am, then given a bottle and slept until 7:30am. Today was a good day. Adria is still getting her appetite back, but she otherwise seems fine.
We have washed every scrap of fabric in the house that isn’t attached: clothes, towels, sheets, blankets, stuffed animals, rugs. We also used disinfectant wipes on knobs, toys, chairs, floors, counters, etc. We’ve gone through three bottles of hand soap. So far, this fool’s errand of sterilization seems to have paid off…Austin hasn’t gotten the stomach bug. We’re still holding our breath a little bit. Neither of us wants to have to comfort him all night when he’s throwing up but doesn’t know why.
