I don’t know when I really started flossing. It feels like I was about 18, but it was probably more like 25. My mom can correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure that I started when I was older than 3.
When we took Adria to her first dentist appointment, the dentist was impressed with her general oral hygiene, but told us that we should be brushing her teeth twice a day, and flossing the space between her bottom front teeth (all of the rest of her teeth have gaps between them). Honestly, that seemed like a lot to ask…we felt like we were doing pretty good just getting a good brushing on her teeth in the evening before bed, and making that part of the routine.
Well, a few days ago Amanda grabbed a bag of “fun flossers,” which are just a set of single-use plastic floss-holders, in fun colors:
It sounded like a nightmare to me, but….turns out, she loves it. Not only was she willing to let me stick that string between her two front teeth, but she’ll do it herself. And there’s more…it’s so much fun, that we can use the floss as a reward and a motivator. Usually she drags her feet getting to the bathroom at the end of the night. But just say, “Do you want to pick which color floss to use tonight?!” and she’ll be scampering for the door.
